Ekom’s four team members went to India in Feb/March 2011 to set up an eye camp, prosthetic limb replacement camp and carry road safety awareness campaign.

We liaised with people in India via telephone and email to prearrange a number of mini camps to assess people with eye related problems; about 1000 people had already been screened and about 200 needed cataract operations. Upon our arrival in India, main camps were held which lasted three days. we fully funded the whole operation.

The second project was limb replacement camp. We fully funded 15 limb replacements at the cost of £1500.

Our third project was road safety awareness and included rural areas, cities and central Delhi. Once again, we distributed high visibility bands and leaflets to schools and gave presentations on road safety. A campaign was carried out in one of the rural areas to promote sustainability through a bike ride, which we helped to organise. We worked with the police in rural areas to highlight issues with visibility during hours of darkness, especially with trolleys on tractors. This is a serious problems during period of harvest when many traverse on the highway at night creating hazard for themselves and for other road users. We purchased large quantities of high visibility reflectors to stick at the back of trolleys and gave them to the local police to hand out to tractor drivers whilst patrolling the highway.
